Chiaroscuro (Italian: “light-dark”), refers to a design medium developed in the late Renaissance and Baroque periods in graphic art and painting, which is characterized by strong contrasts of light and dark and serves to enhance both the spatial and the expressive.
In musical analogies to this technique, this piece reworks the first 32 bars of the second movement, Andante con Moto (“Death and the Maiden”) in Franz Schubert’s String Quartet No. 14 in D minor, D. 810, using computer-assisted composition.
