Nachbild (Afterimage) is the fifth piece in the Schwinden series, in which an instrument is added every seven years, starting with the Trio d-is-appear. This version is supplemented by an 8-channel playback.

An afterimage is a brief optical perception that occurs after staring at a strong light source or image and the original stimulus disappears; it can appear as a brighter spot (positive afterimage) or as an inverted image (negative afterimage) when the retina has become accustomed to the stimulus and the receptors become fatigued. It is an aftereffect of the sensory cells that the brain interprets when the actual source of the stimulus is no longer present, and is an example of an optical illusion.
